There is one figure that has haunted the retail sector for decades: the average accuracy of inventory managed through manual processes hovers around 65 per cent. To put it another way: one in every three stock items shown in your system does not match what is actually in the shop. Decisions on what to restock, what to show as available online and what the website promises for in-shop collection are based on this inaccurate data.
RFID tackles precisely this problem, which is why it has become the standard identification technology in fashion retail and one of the fastest-growing technologies in other sectors. In this guide, we explain what RFID brings to retail, how it works in a shop’s day-to-day operations, which applications deliver results, and what to consider before tagging.

What does RFID bring to retail?
RFID allows each item to be uniquely identified and counted without line of sight, at a rate of hundreds per second. For a retailer, this means that stock-takes, which used to be carried out once or twice a year, can now be done weekly or even daily, with accuracy rates exceeding 95 per cent according to studies by the RFID Lab at Auburn University — the foundation that makes true omnichannel retailing possible.
The cause-and-effect relationship is the key to the entire business case:
- Identification by item (each garment has its own serial number, not just its model number) → you know exactly how many units you have, not just how many you ‘should’ have.
- Mass scanning without line of sight → counting no longer takes up hours of staff time → stock is counted much more frequently.
- Frequent counting → system stock and actual stock align → the website can promise what the shop actually has in stock.
- Reliable stock → fewer size and colour shortages, fewer lost sales, fewer forced markdowns due to stock discrepancies.
How does RFID work in a shop? The full cycle
In retail, RFID operates as a cycle of scans on UHF tags (RAIN RFID) encoded by item: encoding at source → receipt verification → rapid stock-takes on the shop floor and in the warehouse → targeted restocking → and, if desired, exit control at the till or via EAS. Each scan updates the stock levels in the system (ERP/WMS or inventory platform).
- Labelling at source. The RFID tag — whether a hang tag, adhesive label or sewn-in tag — is encoded during manufacture or packaging with a unique identifier per garment (serialised EPC, typically an SGTIN based on the model’s GTIN). Encoding verified on a unit-by-unit basis during manufacture prevents duplicates and erratic reads later on.
- Receipt at the shop or warehouse. Boxes are scanned without being opened: within seconds, it is verified that the goods received match the delivery note, item by item.
- Cyclical stocktaking. An operator with a handheld scanner walks through the shop; thousands of garments are counted in minutes. It is this scanning that ensures accuracy.
- Targeted restocking. The system compares the sales floor with the back stockroom and generates a precise list of what to retrieve: size, colour, quantity.
- Checkout and exit (optional). The same tag can be used to speed up payment and as an anti-theft measure (RFID-based EAS), unifying tags.
- Returns and omnichannel. Every return is instantly reintegrated into saleable stock; online orders can be prepared from the shop using reliable stock (ship-from-store, click & collect).

Practical example: fashion chain with 40 shops
Situation. A chain with 40 shops, 2 million garments per year and growing online sales. Physical stock-taking twice a year; estimated accuracy of 68 per cent; frequent cancellations of online orders due to phantom stock.
RFID implementation.
- Tag: hangtag with a UHF RFID inlay encoded at source (SGTIN per garment), verified item by item during manufacture.
- Scans: goods-in using a handheld reader in each shop; weekly cycle counting (45–60 minutes per shop); daily targeted replenishment.
- Integration: scan events fed into the WMS/ERP; the e-commerce platform publishes availability by shop based on RFID stock levels.
Expected outcome. Stocktaking shifts from being an annual event to a weekly routine; accuracy converges towards industry benchmark levels (>95 per cent); restocking is no longer dependent on staff intuition; and the shop can function as a mini omnichannel warehouse. We do not promise sales figures: these depend on the starting point — what changes is the reliability of the data on which decisions are based.
Common mistakes when implementing RFID in retail
- Tagging in-store rather than at source. Operational costs skyrocket and the quality of the encoding suffers. The tag must arrive already attached and verified.
- Choosing the tag based solely on price. An ill-suited tag (antenna size, chip, placement on folded garments or those with metal trimmings) impairs readability and, with it, the entire business case.
- Measuring success solely on the pilot. The value becomes apparent when cyclical stock-taking becomes routine; this requires operational discipline, not just technology.
- Failing to integrate with e-commerce. If the website continues to display theoretical stock levels, omnichannel performance will not improve, even if the shop’s stock is accurately counted.
- Ignoring returns. Reinstating them into saleable stock within minutes is one of the most profitable yet most overlooked levers.

It’s just getting started: the RAIN industry predicts 2026 as the year the first smartphones with integrated UHF reading capability will be released. Dedicated readers will continue to be used for in-store operations; mobile phones open up customer interaction with the product.
What is the relationship between RFID in retail and the Digital Product Passport?
The European Digital Product Passport (DPP) will require products to be identified and their information made accessible via a data carrier; the textile sector is a priority. Retailers who already serialise garments using RFID have much of the work done: a unique identifier, event tracking and hardware already in place.
